The Looney Tunes return to movie theaters 2024 in The Day the Earth Blurred Up: A Looney Tunes Movie. It may not seem that long since they last appeared on the big screen in 2021’s Space Jam: A New Legacy. However, they have a strange history of appearing in feature films.
Bugs Bunny Superstar was the first Looney Tunes film to be produced in 1975. This film was shown in theaters but it is not an original animated film. It’s a compilation of previous Looney Tunes cartoons, such as What’s Cookin’ Doc or Hair-Raising Hare. It was less a movie than a collection of classics, bringing them all back to the big-screen.
This formula became the basis for a slew theatrical LT movies, including 1979’s The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie and 1981’s The Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie. In 1988, Daffy Duck Quackbusters was released. The Warner vaults were raided for classic shorts, and some original animation was added.
Space Jam was the first Looney Tunes original film. The 90s film, starring Michael Jordan, featured Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in a basketball match with aliens to decide the fate of their cartoon universe. The film was a way to capitalize on Jordan’s fame for appearing in Looney Tunes commercials with characters. However, the feature film that combined 2D animation and live-action basketball was a box office hit. Space Jam would gross approximately $80 million. $250 Million On a budget of 80 Million Dollars.
Space Jam’s popularity would probably lead to a sequel. But production of that film stalled as we entered the 2000s. In the late 1990s, Looney Tunes left syndicated channels for good after decades of running. Looney Tunes Back in Action, released in 2003, was not well received. The film, directed by Joe Dante and starring Bugs and Daffy, was similar to Space Jam, in that it featured Brendan Fraser, Jenna Elfman and Steve Martin. Back in Action, although it was better received by critics than Space Jam, flopped and Looney Toons would not return to the stage for many more years.
Looney Tunes is now a much brighter place. Space Jam’s development was re-started by a series Looney Tunes television shows. Max streaming service offered a new batch Looney Tunes cartoons which felt classic and faithfully re-created the original shorts from the 1930s & 1940s. This format was the foundation for the upcoming movie, The Day the Earth Blurred Up. This film will reportedly centers on Daffy Duck and Porky Pig as they try to save the Earth from an alien invasion.
