The reigning Olympic and World Champion, Neeraj Chopra, is among the five finalists in contention to receive the prestigious award this year. World Athletics announced the list of finalists for the Men’s World Athlete of the Year Award in 2023 on Tuesday.
The five athletes who represent four countries and four area associations have achieved sensational performances in 2023 across a variety of athletics disciplines, winning titles and setting world records at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 one-day circuits, Label Road Races and other events around world,” World Athletics said in a press release.

Other than Neeraj, the four finalists include Shotputter Ryan Crouser (USA) and Pole Vaulter Mondo Durplantis (Sweden), both reigning world champions. Kelvin Kiptum, the marathon world record holder and American sprinter Noah Lyles also make the list.
How did Neeraj become the finalist for the contest?
According to World Athletics’ website, the finalist was determined by a three way process. The World Athletics Council voted by email, as did the World Athletics Family.
The World Athletics social media platforms also allowed fans to vote online. World Athletics reported that a record number of votes (2 million) were cast. World Athletics will announce the World Athletes of the Year on its platforms on 11th December.
