This weekend Jiri Prochazka is going to face Alex Pereira for a vacant UFC light-heavyweight championship. The UFC 205-pound championship was held by either Jon Jones, or Daniel Cormier for more than a decade. Since 2019, four different divisions have won the title, and Alex Pereira may be the fifth.

Why did Jiri Prochazka vacate his UFC Light Heavyweight Title?

Glover Teixeira was a legend who faced Prochazka in the championship. He was in the red on all scorecards going into the final round. Prochazka was able to win the fight via submission with less than 30 seconds left in the match. He became the new world champion and light heavyweight champion. The battle ended in a crazy way.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to keep the belt for long. Prochazka, who had just won the championship, was scheduled to fight Texeira again at UFC 282 on December 20, 2022. A serious shoulder injury forced him to withdraw. He would miss six month of action.

Prochazka decided to give up the championship because he didn’t want to delay his division. His manager claims he made the choice on his own and that UFC didn’t coerce him.

Ironically, Prochazka will now be competing for the vacant title left by a champion sidelined with a protracted injury. “BJP” can win the UFC Light Heavyweight title twice if he defeats Pereira. Only Randy Couture, Jon Jones and others have achieved it.
