It remains to see if Perez’s comments and Tebas counter-comments will aggravate the friction between Real Madrid, and La Liga, as big clubs continue their push for European Super League.
Javier Tebas, the Spanish president of La Liga, has accused Real Madrid president Florentino Perez of spreading ‘lies’. Tebas’ accusation comes at a time when Perez continues to push the European Super League.
Speaking to the club’s members on SaturdayFlorentino Pérez, President of Real Madrid declared the European Super League to be “more necessary than before” and criticized UEFA’s Champions League reform as “absurd”.
Perez’s hour-long address at the club AGM confirmed his support for the Super League, which has been long discussed. He criticised the quality and effectiveness of Spanish referees, VAR and La Liga for controlling club TV revenues.
Perez has been the most vocal defender of the Super League since the European Super League launched in April 2021.
Perez said, via The Athletic: “The institution of football is undergoing a crisis unprecedented in its history. The crisis is at all levels, in Spain as well as in Europe. The president of UEFA is not the owner of European football. Spanish football does NOT belong to La Liga’s president.“
Javier Tebas has responded to Perez’ comments on social networks, slamming the Real Madrid President.
He wrote:He or she can be contacted at [Perez] adds very serious lies about La Liga, He lies about the increase in the president’s salary, no increase, he lies about the transparency of La Liga, he lies about the expropriation of TV rights… the only thing that reflects his increasingly unbridled “messianism”, where he wants everything to revolve around from what HE thinks”.
“La Liga is an organization that is democratic, where the votes are secret. Real Madrid will not be elected to the delegate commissioner because they do not have the support necessary.“
It remains to see if Perez’s comments and Tebas counter-comments will aggravate the friction between Real Madrid, and La Liga.
